Lake Johnson meet - June 2, 2002

Bob Smith, Meet director

This meet was a good illustration of why we don't do orienteering over the summer. With the temperatures and humidity both in the 90s, running through thick vegetation (a lot of which is poison ivy) loses its appeal. The one positive thing is that apparently the ticks are boycotting Lake Johnson. Turnout was definitely low, compared to most meets, but about two dozen people braved the heat and came out for a low-key, low-tech (no computer) meet.

Based on experience with past June meets, I purposely made the courses shorter than usual. Even so, the finish times suggest that most people wisely adjusted their pace to the conditions, and most of them also took bottles of water with them on the course.

Thanks go to Jan Lewis and Jim O'Donnell for helping with registration; to Lori Huberman for teaching the beginners class; and to Jim, Julie Randolph, Brendan Shields and William Ebenstein for picking up controls.
