It’s 2002—Do You Know What Your Property is Up To?

March Meeting to Focus on Demolition by Neglect List

At the February 2002 BHA meeting, Dan Becker from the Raleigh Historic Districts Commission (HDC) discussed the City’s Demolition by Neglect program. This program seeks to prevent property owners from harming the overall quality of historic districts by neglecting properties to the point that they cannot be saved. Following the presentation, several Boylan Heights residents volunteered to survey the neighborhood and develop a list of properties to be submitted to the Historic Districts Commission for review as “Demolition by Neglect.” A list of appropriate properties will be forwarded to the HDC for review in 2002.

The committee came up with the following list of properties. This list will be discussed and individual properties voted on at the March 26 BHA meeting. Please take time to familiarize yourself with the properties for discussion.

 The property addresses include:

The Pink Truck is Coming! The Pink Truck is Coming!—April 1, 2002

The City of Raleigh will be sending the Pink Truck (which, unfortunately, is no longer pink) to our neighborhood on Monday, April 1. Collection of “stuff” you want to get rid of will start at 7:00 a.m. Remember, no tires, batteries, construction materials, or oil paints. Yes to appliances, dried out latex paint (open up those cans now!), yard waste (bagged in clear bags), and furniture. The pickup begins at 7:00 a.m. and once a street is covered it will not be done again, so make sure you get things out to the curb early.

Traditionally we have treated the work crew to lunch on the day of pick up. Elizabeth Dunbar will host the luncheon at 422 Cutler St. Contact Elizabeth at DunbarCC@aol.com if you are interested in making something for the lunch. Deliver lunch contributions to 422 Cutler Street before 10:00 a.m. Easter Monday, April 1. We also welcome $$ donations for paper goods or if people do not have time to cook. There are usually about 15 men on the crew.

Nominations for BHA Officers

The Boylan Heights Association seeks nominations for the offices of president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. Officers for 2002-2003 will be elected at the Memorial Day picnic. Please consider volunteering your time and expertise to the Association! Contact Deanna Kerrigan at 715-0200, ext. 304 or kerrigand@mindspring.com if you are interested.

No Trespassing Forms Available

During our January neighborhood walkthrough with Chief Perlov and staff, we learned that neighborhood residents may fill out a trespassing form and return it to police, allowing them authority to arrest anyone on your property as long as they are not named on your form. In order to use the form, you must have a “No Trespassing” sign somewhere on your property (this does not need to be a large sign and it also does not need to be in a very conspicuous place). For a form, please contact either Deanna Kerrigan, 821-4172) or Joseph Huberman (). Forms will be available at BHA meetings.
