Fred Partin writes: I am a Raleigh native who grew up in Boylan Heights (1942 to 1952) and lived at 1023 West South Street. [Above] is a photo which was taken around 1946 in the back yard of the Hedgepaths, right across from my house. Almost all of the children in the neighborhood posed for this photo. I am standing in the front row, far left.

Two other former W. South Street residents who live outside of the area are: Margaret Suber, the fifth child from the left in the front row.  She is now a college teacher in a northern divinity school. Robert Springle, who was not in the picture, is pastor of the First International Baptist Church in Warsaw, Poland.

Robert's dad made us a bicycle from old pipe fittings and spare parts in the early 40's. We all took turns riding it until we could afford the real thing. We also used discarded wood from the washboard factory on Boylan Avenue (across form the Boylan mansion) to build several treehouses in the large oaks near my house.

Regarding our continued attachment to Boylan heights ...Here are a few lines from Robert that say it best  -

When I get lonely, I just return to the "alley" behind South Street and to
our little "camps" and things, the bikes, the skates, basket-ball, the
school bus, cutting your mom's grass, lemonaide, Mrs. Hedgepeth's
    kindergarden, etc...

It is (also) strange as we look "back" at America from quite a different
angle. Quite like gazing at a painting from a distance to get a different
perspective than that one up close...
