Meeting on June 27, 2002

The following were present at the 5:00 PM meeting at Cup-A-Joe's on Thursday, June 27th, 2002: Joseph Huberman, Benson Kirkman, Jordan Bonbrest, Tim Fletcher, Tracey Oliveto, and Will Hooker.

The first and main item on the agenda was the finalization of the mission statement for the Dix Community Partnership. Following is that statement:

Following completion of the Mission Statement, we agreed to individually work on goals; we further agreed that we would articulate these goals, and share and discuss them through email. We also discussed strategies for the next stages of our mission, including which agencies/ institutions we needed to apprise of our workings, the people within each agency that would be best as a starting contact point, and whom, from the people present at our meeting, would be responsible for contacting which agency.

Will Hooker brought up the fact that NC State University is already at work on the portion of the Dix Campus that has been ceded to them. Roughly, this is the acreage between Barbour Drive and Centennial Blvd. Of concern for our committee, it also includes the terraces that lie east of the main administrative building on Barbour Dr., which currently contains the big parking lot. NC State wanted this land to preserve the magnificent view of the Raleigh skyline, but it is also the area that the DCP, in our preliminary conversations, would like to see utilized as the 3000 - 4000 seat amphitheater that has been discussed for downtown Raleigh. These two desires easily become mutually supportive.

Because of the work already in progress at NC State, it was decided that Joseph Huberman should write a letter to Michael Harwood, the University Architect, requesting a seat on their community liaison committee; this has been done and is acceptable to Mr. Harwood.

Joseph Huberman, in his efforts to set up a web site for our group following the June 27th meeting, discovered that the letters, DCP, were already taken. In checking further, he did find that he could use the term, DixCP, as the base for our web site. Frankly, I like this abbreviation better than DCP because it is more specific regarding our mission. Any other thoughts on this? Joseph will return to Raleigh on Tuesday, July 16th, and will shortly thereafter determine the date of the next meeting.

Respectfully submitted, Will Hooker
